We began our Tour of Rome with a Colosseum Underground, Arena Floor, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill tour. We booked it through What a Life tour company and were very pleased with the experience.

We met up with our guide Carlotta and another couple. The five of us headed off to enjoy an insightful walk through thousands of years of world history. Carlotta, a native Roman and archeologist, shared her expertise with wit and energy as we descended into the depths of the colosseum.

I took a couple European History courses in college, but those paled in comparison to viewing first hand the layers of human civilization dating back to the 8th century BC. The opulence and engineering feats accomplished by the early Romans eventually fell with the Roman Empire. Many of the resources used in their construction were dismantled and used to build the Vatican and many of the churches throughout the city.

I am including a number of images taken during our quest and hope that they will inspire you to set out on your own adventures.

“It’s a dangerous business, going out your door. You step into the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” – J.R.R. Tolkien.

Wishing you all the best!
